Ibrahim Onyango Oyoo

Ibrahim Onyango Oyoo

by CURE Kenya / Monday, 08 October 2018 / Published in Step In

He is the 1st born with two younger siblings. His love for soccer was evident as he narrated how he was an avid Arsenal fan and shared playing football as one of his hobbies. However, despite his love for the game, it was evident that playing football was not easy for him, it was a struggle. Ibrahim has deformities on two of his bones on both his legs, his femur and his tibia, deformities that have resulted in severe bowing of his legs.

It was difficult for us to understand the full history of his condition, being as Ibrahim was not very conversant with the genesis of his condition, and his grandmother, Judith, who was also his primary guardian could only communicate to us through a translator. Judith found herself taking care of Ibrahim and two of his siblings after the death of their father and the fleeing of their mother. His mother left her three children soon after her husband’s death since she was unable to cope with the demands of single parenthood.

Ibrahim’s deformity is marked by outward bowing at the knee which means that that the lower leg is angled inwardly. According to Judith, he was born with the condition which had continued to worsen over time. Due to lack of information on how and where to get the required surgical intervention, poverty and competing needs, Ibrahim has remained with the condition, which has unfortunately continued to worsen. Thankfully, mid this year, Judith heard about CURE Kenya mobile clinic in Kisumu, their county, through a radio advertisement. She decided to exercise her faith and that is how we meet.

The diagnosis and cause of treatment for Ibrahim is now clear, but the cost of the multiple surgeries that he will need are way above what Judith can afford. Fending for her grandchildrens basic needs has been difficult, and even thought she would love to see her grandson get the much needed surgical intervention, getting the monies required for the surgery is near impossible. But you can make this possible, if you STEP – IN.
